Museo del Tesoro del Duomo
Mostre e Iniziative
The Museum is hosted in some rooms located on the ground floor of the Archbishop’s Palace, which were frescoed during the episcopacy of Monsignor Agostino Ferrero (1511-1536). It displays a good choice of the assets belonging to the Tesoro del Capitolo della Cattedrale di Vercelli (Chapter Treasure of the Vercelli Cathedral), an extraordinary and important documentation of the prestige of the Church of Vercelli since the Medieval times. The museum collection leads visitors to discover different artistic and liturgical realities compared to the current ones, highliting the role of Vercelli as an artistic crossroad and centre of the Piedmontese evangelization. It houses a true copy of the Crucifix, an extraordinary piece of goldsmith’s art of Ottonian times displayed in the Cathedral, as well as its original “filling” made of wood, cocciopesto (Opus signinum) and organic resins which, together with textile fragments, supported the thin external silver sheet. In its rooms there are also other important objects, such as the parchment-like Scroll depicting scenes from the Acts of the Apostles, which was produced in the scriptorium of Vercelli at the end of the 12th century, as well as many different types of reliquaries dating back to 7th - 18th century. In December 2013 the Stanze del Papa (Pope’s rooms) were opened to the public: these rooms accommodated John Paul II during his visit in Vercelli in 1998 and now they contain part of the textile heritage, which has a high artistic and devotional value, such as John Paul II’s vestments, Giuliano della Rovere’s chasuble (first bishop of Vercelli from 1502 to 1503 who became Pope with the name of Julius II) and the 16th century tapestry with the Battesimo di Cristo (Baptism of Christ) by a Flemish atelier.
